Hear My Voice was created by Dr. Janice Marie Collins as a means of working towards creating a platform of diversity and inclusion. We are de-marginalizing the voices of people in society by sharing their stories on this platform. We report stories that are not often found on mainstream media on television or online. HMV digs deeper into the issues, finding a voice in every societal battle to highlight and uplift. HMV's primary team consists of students from cross-disciplines and campus on the campus of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. HMV is also a collective that works with and supports the voices from across other disciplines and campuses, community members, professionals, various age groups including an 8-year old reporter and international. The praxis used to manage and encourage a working culture of inclusion, respect of authentic selves, self agency and appreciation for diversity is called Active Centralized Empowerment (ACE). Dr. Collins has been researching and developing this module over the past 14 years and uses it as a pedagogical approach to help de-marginalize all of her students regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, class, physical abilities, sexual orientation and other identity constructs that can be used to oppress someone. A key element of ACE is Transformational Leadership skill development. For a brief explanation on how ACE de-marginalizes individuals and groups click here.
