Conservative influencer Myron Gaines recently generated a crowd on College Green as part of his ‘Uncensored America” tour. He encouraged students to approach a microphone and debate him on various topics. His appearance is generating backlash because of his controversial comments regarding women and antisemitism, and for doing a Nazi salute as he arrived, according to an uncredited source on Yik Yak. Students are now calling for Ohio University to condemn Gaines' comments.
Rental Inspections Survey
The City of Athens Rental Inspections Processes Committee is conducting a digital survey on local rental housing conditions. Supervised under the Affordable Housing Commission, the committee is welcoming tenants, landlords, and property managers to report on their experiences. It will be open through May of this year. The goal of the survey is to help the committee better understand what is needed to improve the functional and structural safety of rentals in the city.
Charlotte Hampton Visits OU
Charlotte Hampton, a student journalist arrested on Dartmouth College campus nearly two years ago, visited OU’s Scripps College to discuss the importance of independent journalism. On May 1, 2024, Hampton and multiple other students and faculty were arrested while covering encampments for Palestine for the school’s newspaper. It took over a week for her charges to be dropped by the school. Now Hampton works for the Student Press Law Center,advocating for freedom of expression and press, reminding students of their rights.
LeVar Burton Speaks at OU
LeVar Burton, whose career in acting, directing, writing and advocacy spans nearly five decades, visited OU as part of the Kennedy Speaker Series. Attendees of all ages sat down in the Templeton Blackburn Memorial Auditorium to hear about Burton’s work on Roots, Star Trek, Reading Rainbow and more. He discussed the importance of children’s literature, civil rights, public broadcast media, and spreading kindness.
Cooking 4 College
Students in Ohio University’s consumer sciences program are taking a course where they learn to cook diverse, hearty, healthy meals on a college budget. Each week consists of learning to cook meals from a different culture. The class not only gives these students the opportunity to expand their culinary knowledge, but also to build a community around food. These meals also include vegetarian and gluten-free options to ensure everyone can have a seat at the dinner table.
