Dan Gray NewsBreak Rundown:
Cherry Blossoms Falling Fast
217 Cherry Trees line the banks of the Hocking River between the Hock-hocking Adena Bikeway and South Shafer Street in Athens. National Geographic ranked Athens as one of the best spots in the country to see the pink and white blossoms, and that ranking came as recently as 2019. A gift from Chubu University in Japan all the way back in 1979, the trees represent the starting point of the nearly five-decade long international relationship between their institution and Ohio University. While the blooms are almost entirely gone this season, the trees and their annual color show will stick around for years to come.

Cooking 4 College
In Patton Hall, one course is teaching students to savor what it means to be a chef. RHT 3340 part of the Restaurant, Hotel, and Tourism program in the Patton College of education. Under the watchful eyes of Professor Thomas Stevenson, the coursework is conducted in a hybrid classroom and kitchen, and once lectures conclude students get behind the stoves. Each week, assignments involve cuisines from different regions around the world. Students work to prepare restaurant size portions of meals while working with menu recipes.

OU’s McClure School for Emerging Communication Technologies Ranked Top-50 in Nation for Virtual and Augmented Reality
This past summer, Animation Career Review, a college review board focused on animation and new technological programming in universities, released their newest school rankings of Virtual and Augmented Reality programs. Ohio University ranked 37th in the country, 9th in the Midwest, and second overall in the state of Ohio (behind OSU). The Warren J. McClure School for Emerging Communication Technologies in the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University oversees all the VR and AR programming here. School Director Dr. Charles “Chip” Linscott sits down to talk about the high ranking, as well as the lab in Scripps Hall that played a huge role in the high ranking.

Tom Alter Event
Tom Alter, former Assistant Professor of History at Texas State University, was fired in September of 2025 by TSU Administration after comments he made at a socialist conference referring to effecting change in our federal government. His firing came without due process, and after the Texas Supreme Court ordered him to be reinstated at the university. Alter’s “Defend Free Speech Tour” made a stop at Ohio University’s Morton Hall in late February. Alter spoke on a panel of other community organizers at the event, giving speeches and hosting a Q&A-like discussion at the end of the speeches.
