Who We Are:
"Hear My Voice (HMV)," began as an interdisciplinary project of dedicated students, faculty and staff on and off the campus. Students and community members volunteer to work towards creating a platform of inclusion. Building and expanding the learning space, additional content for this web collaborative project is also supported by students in independent study courses, senior capstones and across disciplines. It includes print, multimedia, podcasts, broadcast, and digital forms of publication. In all, this is a high level of Experiential Learning and Ethical Storytelling. There is also leadership development. The framing structure used for HMV is called Active Centralized Empowerment (ACE), a praxis and pedagogy that Dr. Collins developed over 20 years in Higher Education and 30 years of professional experience using Mixed-Methodology. A.C.E. transforms learning spaces of oppression into positive, empowering spaces of critical thinking and freedom for anyone who wants to be authentically free. Inclusive within its framework, A.C.E. directly challenges spaces of Marginalization for Every Participant. More than power in the margins-it is Movement from the margins to Empowerment.
Defining Marginalization:
Marginalization: Treatment of a person, group or concept as insignificant or peripheral.
Example: U.S. police officers have shot and killed the exact same number of unarmed white people as they have unarmed black people: 50 each. But because the white population is approximately five times larger than the black population, that means unarmed black Americans were five times as likely as unarmed white Americans to be shot and killed by a police officer. The surge in the cases of police officers killing unarmed African Americans initiated the Black Lives Matter Movement. Research has revealed that African Americans, especially, African American males are perceived as being armed, committing an unlawful act, and violent. In many cases, this perception is a misperception which can be viewed as a premeditated act of racism.
The Equal Pay Act requires that men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work.
Based on the data trend since 2001, AAUW researchers have determined that it will take more than a century, until 2152, for the pay gap to close.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and guarantees equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodations, state and local government services, and telecommunications.
Americans with disabilities are hired less frequently and receive less pay and in some cases, accommodations are not adequate.
